WEEK 15 NOTES
It is looking more and more like the Patriots will have the top offense and the Steelers the top defense in the final 2010 Aikman Efficiency Ratings. But the number one spot in the Aikman Combined is very much up for grabs.
This week’s top team in the Aikman Combined is San Diego, as the Chargers supplanted the Giants who fell to 4th in the wake of Philadelphia’s late game explosion.
Only 3.8 points, twice as volatile in Combined, separate the top five teams with the Steelers, Falcons and Patriots also in the hunt.
With just an 8-6 record, San Diego’s success in the Aikman Ratings has not converted into wins, with faulty special teams (not measured) having contributed to many of the Chargers’ six losses.
We would also note, that San Diego has the best combination in the NFL’s yards only rankings – 2nd on offense and 1st on defense.
San Diego is less dominant in the Aikmans – 6th on offense and 5th on defense.
The Aikmans confirm the low impression of the NFC West, with all four teams clustered in the bottom 12.
The only team with a losing record in the top half of the Aikman Combined is Tennessee at #16. The Buccaneers (#20) and Jaguars (#22) are the two teams with winning records in the bottom half of the ratings.
Even though they were substantially outgained by the Packers on Sunday night, the Patriots offense produced a solid 100.0 Aikman Game Rating in Week 15 and stayed on top of the Aikman Offense rating. They still rank only 9th in the NFL’s “yards only” formula.
It is the fourth straight week that the Patriots have had the Aikman Offense lead.
Although losing to the Jets, Pittsburgh (84.4) widened its Aikman Defense lead from 1.6 points to 2.7 over the Giants. The Bears with a strong effort against the Vikings are 3rd, just 0.1 behind the Giants, after improving 1.8 points from last week to 81.6.
Pittsburgh, like New England, is atop the Aikmans for the fourth straight week.
